Generator Synchronization panel

Detailed Introduction to Generator Synchronization Panel

A generator synchronization panel is dedicated to the synchronous grid connection of generators or busbars with the power system.

It monitors the voltage, frequency and phase of the power system, the incoming generator and the busbar. Meanwhile, it can adjust parameters in automatic, manual and semi-automatic modes, so that all parameters between the incoming side and the operating system become identical or within the allowable deviation range, realizing fast and reliable grid connection.

Generator Synchronization panel

What is a Generator Synchronization Panel?

Most generators adopted are synchronous generators. For a synchronous generator to be connected and operated in parallel with the power grid, the following conditions must be met:

The generator voltage shall be equal in magnitude and identical in phase to the grid voltage;

The generator frequency shall be the same as the grid frequency;

The phase sequence of the generator shall be consistent with that of the power grid.

Minor deviations are permissible for the first two conditions, while the third must be strictly satisfied. Before grid connection, the generator forms an independent power system separate from the external distribution network.

Synchronization is required prior to parallel operation, mainly considering three deviations: voltage difference, phase difference and frequency difference. The ideal synchronization point has zero deviation for all three parameters, which is practically unattainable. Therefore, grid connection permission is issued as long as the voltage, phase and frequency deviations are within allowable limits, enabling safe and reliable paralleling of the generator set.

The smaller the deviations, the lower the inrush current and system reactive power demand, as well as the less impact on the external power grid. The generator synchronization panel functions to implement and control the whole synchronization process.

Cabinet Body, Wiring Harness & Terminal StripsProvides installation space, standardized wiring and mechanical protection complying with low-voltage cabinet specifications.
Harmonic & Anti-interference ComponentsFilters electromagnetic interference and harmonic distortion on sampling loops to guarantee stable sampling and accurate synchronization judgment.
Backup Data Storage BatteryPreserves configuration parameters, fault records and historical operation logs when the panel loses external power.

Features of Generator Synchronization Panel

This panel integrates automatic and manual quasi-synchronization functions for high-precision generator grid connection. It automatically matches voltage, frequency and phase between generator and grid, and coordinates the excitation system and governor to achieve fast, accurate breaker closing.

Manual synchronization acts as a reliable backup to ensure continuous unit operation. It supports multi-circuit synchronization via panel selector switch. Reserved interfaces for excitation and governing systems enable convenient wiring and linkage control of voltage, reactive power, active power and speed regulation. It displays real-time grid/generator electrical and excitation parameters.

Standard 4–20mA analog output supports remote monitoring and HMI configuration. The corrosion-resistant 2mm aluminum-zinc cabinet ensures long service life. It is centrally installed with generator protection and LCU panels for easy operation and commissioning.

Precautions for Operation of Synchronization Panel

All signal circuits and external wiring terminals connected to the synchronization panel must be carefully checked repeatedly to ensure correct operation and prevent major accidents caused by asynchronous paralleling.

Before synchronization testing, the PT signals introduced into the panel must be verified with a phase sequence meter to ensure consistent phase sequence between the generator side and the system side.

Push the generator circuit breaker to the test position, then conduct automatic and manual synchronization tests. Before testing, the normally open contact signal of the circuit breaker must be temporarily disconnected from the DEH system; otherwise, turbine speed runaway may occur instantly upon grid connection.

Only after the test verifies correct performance can the generator circuit breaker be switched to the working position, and the breaker normally open contact signal be reconnected to DEH for actual formal synchronous grid connection.

FAQ

Q: What is a generator synchronization panel?

A generator synchronization panel is a dedicated cabinet with ANSI 25 synchronism check protection. It verifies voltage, frequency, phase sequence and phase angle between generator and grid bus, outputs closing permission only within allowable deviation range, and prevents dangerous out-of-step paralleling that causes generator shaft damage and winding burnout.

Q: Where are generator synchronizing panels widely used?

It applies to hydropower stations, thermal power units, industrial backup generator rooms, distributed energy stations, wind and photovoltaic grid-connected projects, and multi-generator parallel operation substations.

Q: What are the 4 mandatory paralleling conditions for generator synchronization?

  1. Generator and grid with identical phase sequence
  2. Equal voltage amplitude within tolerance
  3. Consistent frequency
  4. Phase angle difference within the preset closing window

Q: What risks will out-of-sync closing bring?

Out-of-step parallel connection produces huge impact current and torsional torque, which may crack the rotor shaft, burn stator windings, trip upstream power protection and even permanently damage circuit breakers and primary equipment.

Q: What operation modes does the synchronization panel support?

  • Automatic Synchronization: The system automatically adjusts generator frequency via governor and voltage via excitation regulator, and automatically closes the breaker once conditions are met, suitable for unattended operation.
  • Manual Synchronization: Operators adjust parameters manually and complete closing according to synchroscope indication, mainly used for commissioning, inspection and emergency scenarios.
  • Dead Bus Synchronization: Supports generator charging the unpowered busbar first before paralleling with other power sources.

Q: What standard functions are integrated in the panel?

Real-time synchroscope indication, voltage & frequency difference monitoring, synchronism interlock blocking, closing pulse time limit, synchronization overtime alarm, breaker position feedback, anti-reclosing interlock and reverse power linkage trip.

Q: Why does the synchroscope rotate continuously during preparation?

There is an obvious frequency difference between generator and grid. Adjust the unit governor to reduce frequency slip until the pointer rotates slowly near the closing position.

Q: The panel cannot send closing signal after parameter confirmation

Check PT secondary sampling wiring and fuses, confirm no phase sequence error, verify interlock enable permission, and check whether the deviation threshold is set too strict.

Q: Can users modify synchronization tolerance parameters?

All voltage difference, frequency difference, phase angle threshold and action delay are password protected and editable via local panel or upper computer configuration software.

Q: Automatic synchronization always fails to finish within timeout

Properly extend the synchronization waiting time; check the response speed of governor and AVR excitation system; shield electromagnetic interference on signal sampling cables.

Q: PT voltage display is abnormal on the panel

Inspect PT secondary loop for open circuit, blown fuses and loose wiring terminals; recheck the wiring correspondence between generator side PT and system side PT.

Q: The whole panel has no display and no power response

Check auxiliary control power supply (AC220V / DC110V / DC220V / DC24V optional); replace the internal power fuse; repair or replace the power module if the input power is normal.
