Description

Overview of IEC 61850 Transformer Protection Relay

  • As a supplement to transformer main and backup protection, the digital main transformer integrated monitoring and control device realizes remote measuring, remote signaling, remote control and remote regulation. It is generally panel-mounted with transformer differential relay protection and other transformer protection relays.
  • These IEC 61850 compliant protection relays for transformer cover full transformer protection and control demands.

On-load Tap Changer Function

  • These transformer protection devices cooperate with on-load tap changer controller to perform tap regulation. Automatic, manual and remote control modes are supported. No voltage drop at minimum tap and no voltage rise at maximum tap. Single-step tap change limited by preset delay, output resets automatically after timeout.

FAQ

Q:How to protect a transformer?

A:Electrical protection of transformer shall be configured according to capacity and operating environment, adopting customized schemes for different units.

Q:How to size overcurrent protection for a transformer?

A:As key relay for transformer protection, over current protection of transformer sets operating current to evade maximum load current and inrush current. Rated current adopts 1.1~1.2 times for load avoidance and 5~12 times for instantaneous trip against inrush current. Delay time matches subordinate protection to guarantee selectivity.

Q:Protective measures applied to 132 kV main transformer protection

A:

transformer protection

No. Protection Type Core Function Description
1 Differential Transformer Protection Rapidly isolate inter-phase and turn-to-turn short circuit faults of transformer windings
2 Transformer Overcurrent Protection Phase and zero-sequence overcurrent serves as reliable backup protection for differential protection
3 Transformer Earth Fault Protection Defend against earth short circuit accidents of the transformer
4 Transformer Overload Protection Monitor overheating risk of the transformer and trigger alarm alerts
5 Comprehensive Electrical Transformer Protection Covers voltage, frequency abnormal protection and lightning defense functions
6 Transformer Non-electrical Protection Safeguards gas, oil temperature, pressure and cooling system operating status
7 On-load Tap Changer Interlock Protection Avoids equipment damage caused by improper operation of the tap changer

Q:IEEE guide for transformer protection

A:Core Orientation of the Guide

The IEEE transformer protection standards issued by IEEE Standards Association include design principles, implementation methods, typical application cases and field operation guidelines. Together with IEC 61850 transformer protection relays, they achieve excellent performance in practicability, economy and stability for transformer protection systems.

Q:What is restricted earth fault protection of transformer

A:This protection is mainly applied to internal earth faults of transformer windings. It offers high sensitivity against earth faults near the neutral point and serves as a dedicated earth fault solution for large power transformers. This function is fully supported by IEC 61850 Transformer Protection Relay.
