FAQ

Q1. What is a low voltage motor protection relay?

A digital protection device designed to protect low voltage motors against electrical faults such as overload, short circuit, phase loss, unbalance, and earth faults, while also providing monitoring and control functions.

Q2. What voltage and current ranges does the relay support?

It typically supports AC voltage up to 690V and current ranges from 1A to 800A (or higher with external CTs) – please refer to the specific model’s datasheet for exact ratings.

Q3. What protection functions are integrated?

Common functions include overload protection, short circuit protection, phase loss protection, phase unbalance protection, earth fault protection, locked rotor protection, and under/over voltage protection.

Q4. Does it support three-phase motor protection?

Yes. It is designed for three-phase AC motors and provides comprehensive protection for all three phases.

Q5. Can it protect against motor overload and locked rotor?

Yes. It includes thermal overload protection with adjustable trip curves, as well as locked rotor protection that trips when starting current persists beyond the allowable time.

Q6. Does it provide phase loss and phase unbalance protection?

Yes. It continuously monitors phase currents and trips when a phase loss or excessive unbalance (typically >10-15%) is detected.

Q7. Does the relay support earth fault protection?

Yes. It supports earth fault protection, typically using core balance CT (zero-sequence CT) or residual current calculation.

Q8. Can it monitor motor current, voltage and power?

Yes. It provides real-time monitoring of current, voltage, active power, reactive power, power factor, and energy consumption.

Q9. Does it support Modbus RTU or SCADA communication?

Yes. It supports Modbus RTU over RS-485 as standard, enabling seamless connection to SCADA and PLC systems for remote monitoring and control.

Q10. What is the difference between a digital motor protection relay and a thermal overload relay?

A thermal overload relay is an electromechanical device that provides basic overload protection using bimetallic elements, while a digital motor protection relay is microprocessor-based and offers multiple protection functions (overload, short circuit, phase loss, unbalance, earth fault, etc.), precise adjustable settings, real-time monitoring, communication capability, and fault recording – providing far more comprehensive protection and intelligence.
